Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Alongside Extreme Version
Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, manufactured with a 2-nanometer process, along with the 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, which offers more advanced AI, video recording, and gaming performance. Motorola confirmed it will use the Extreme chip in the Signature 27; both chips will also be used by Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo, Honor, iQoo, Nubia, OnePlus, Redmi, Redmagic, and ZTE.

Qualcomm has introduced its new flagship phone chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. According to the company's announcement, the 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is also joining the lineup this year. Qualcomm describes both chips as flagship offerings; the technical differences between the two models are relatively limited and mostly concern the Extreme version's enhanced AI processing, video recording, and gaming performance.
Shared features and manufacturing technology
According to the company's announcement, both Gen 6 chips are manufactured using a 2-nanometer process and share many common features, including the modem, display capabilities, security features, GPS, and memory and storage support. Qualcomm no longer publishes detailed core configurations for its chips; however, the shared CPU information is the same for both models: two prime cores clocked up to 5 GHz and six performance cores running at up to 4 GHz. Nevertheless, the Extreme model is said to deliver somewhat higher performance across the CPU, GPU, and NPU.

Differences in the Extreme model
Some differences are clearer. According to the company's announcement, the 8 Elite Extreme can offer more advanced video recording, including 8K at 60 fps and 4K at 240 fps, and provides support for the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec. A larger shared memory pool for the NPU enables faster and more efficient AI performance on the Extreme chip. Dedicated matrix cores for AI in the GPU and more memory provide a slight boost to gaming performance when AI features are in use.
Manufacturer preferences and industry context
Since core performance appears similar, the move to the Extreme chip is regarded as a relatively small step; therefore, which phones manufacturers will use each chip in is a matter of curiosity. Motorola became the first company to confirm that it will use the Extreme chip in its newly announced Signature 27 flagship model. According to Qualcomm's announcement, both chips will also be used by Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo, Honor, iQoo, Nubia, OnePlus, Redmi, Redmagic, and ZTE.
The two Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips are Qualcomm's first chips manufactured using 2-nanometer production technology. These chips are in the same group as the Apple A20 Pro and MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro, which bring the new manufacturing scale to smartphones.
