Netflix Releases First Trailer for Oscar-Winning Director's New Sci-Fi Film
Netflix has released the first trailer for Oscar-winning director Brad Bird's new animated film Ray Gunn. The sci-fi detective story, set in a retro-futuristic megacity, will reach audiences in theaters on December 4 and on Netflix on December 18.

Netflix has released the first trailer for Ray Gunn, the new animated film from Oscar-winning director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant, Ratatouille). According to the company's announcement, the film will reach audiences in theaters and on Netflix in December.
Set in Metropia, a retro-futuristic megacity, Ray Gunn follows private detective Raymond Gunn, voiced by Sam Rockwell, as he tries to solve a murder mystery involving multi-talented star Venus Nova (Scarlett Johansson). The film is being produced by Skydance Animation.

The production marks Bird's return to the director's chair after Incredibles 2. In a press release, Bird described the film as "The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers" and characterized it as a nod to hard-boiled detective stories and the sci-fi mystery and future noir genres.
In an interview, Bird stated that the film is not a Pixar production, saying, "That wasn't a judgment against Pixar." He added, "I wanted it to have its own flavor, to be a little different, and to have an edge that I thought people there might not be all that enthusiastic about."
A retro-futuristic sci-fi detective story
The trailer shows that Ray Gunn carries all the elements of a classic sci-fi detective story: action, hard-boiled lines, a mystery to be solved, and a turbulent love story. Work on the film's idea dates back to 1996, when Bird wrote the first script.
The film's cast includes names such as Alan Tudyk, Matt Berry, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Chernus, Kether Donohue, Michelle Rodriguez, Aasif Mandvi, Matt Jones, Kathryn Hunter, John Ratzenberger, Justin Peck, and Patton Oswalt.
After being presented at the Annecy Film Festival, the film will be released in select theaters and in a limited number of 70mm formats on December 4, following Netflix's decision to give it a theatrical release. The production will be released on Netflix on December 18.
Ray Gunn is expected to reach audiences around the same period as Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part 3, both of which will be released on December 18. It is also being assessed that the film's availability on Netflix could help it stand out in this competition.
